how they judge beef cattle in the ring?

i went to a junior beef show

all heifers.

all Santa Gertrudis.

i managed to pick the top two out every time.

but i was looking at what i thought i should see.

what would you and the judge be looking for in these cattle?

how do they judge them?

mine was simple, ive been around show cows before and ive been around slaughter cattle. i know one from the other and i can tell you which is the best looking but i cant tell you how i know. ><

so what does a judge look for?

With beef cattle they look at a ratio of frame to muscle, with just the right amount of fat composites. With breeding cattle like heifers they also look at confirmation. Nice legs, large hips, udder placement, and things like that. Breeding cows and heifers are going to around longer than market steers and they are also passing these traits on to future offspring. One other thing with breeding cattle they may look at is temperament, because that is a genetic trait in cattle as well. They also have to follow a breed standard if it is a breed show. You can see breed characteristics at the link below.

Is it true that farmers are using their stock cattle for beef?

because the price for beef is so good at the moment. If so what happens when the breeding cattle have gone? I am not up on beef farming but it seems to me as if it could mean problems for the future.

This cycle has been going on for a hundred years. The farmers know the markets better than the ‘genius’s’ on wall street. When the beef prices are high, farmers well sell off some of their older, unproductive brood cows (the mamma’s) to capitalize on the high prices. Later, the markets will drop and they will hold more animals from the market to rebuild their herds until the prices go back up. No dumb farmers here!
